SEMINAR: Marilena Mosco: A Free Spirit for the Art of Florence

From 3:30 to 6:30 pm, join us for a half-day seminar (in Italian) at Florence’s Accademia delle Arti del Disegno: ‘Marilena Mosco: Uno spirito libero nell’arte di Firenze’. Known for bringing overlooked treasures – like historic frames and art-jewels – into the limelight, Marilena Mosco was director of Pitti’s Silver Museum. Her ground-breaking work as author and curator includes Living Nature in the House of the Medici and Floralia, in addition to her most famous exhibition held at the Pitti: ‘Mary Magalene: Between the Sacred and Profane’, in which she explored contrasting depictions of the saint from the Middle Ages into the Baroque period.

This event brings together la crème de la crème of Florentine scholarship, and attendees can expect lectures and insight from the likes of Carlo Sisi, Helen Manner, Stefano Casciu, Jennifer Celani and Giovanna Uzzani, with introductions by Cristina Acidini, Alessandra Baroni, Giovanna Giusti and Marilena’s daughter Valentina Mosco. The seminar includes an ‘intermission’ performance by musician Martina Weber on the bass viol (a Baroque version of the cello).

Organised by Cultural Association Il Palmerino, the Calliope Arts Foundation, the AADFI and the ‘Alessandra Bonacossi’ Archive for the Memory and Writings of Women at the State Archives in Florence, this event is part of the Estate Fiorentina 2026 programme. Admission is free.
